Discord May Deactivate Accounts Without Phone Numbers – Here’s How to Add Your Phone Number to Discord
Discord is deactivating accounts that do not have phone numbers associated with them. This subreddit is blasting Discord for automatically and instantly deactivating accounts when the user changes their password or email address while being connected to Public WiFi, mobile network, or VPN for not having a phone number associated with the account.
Users on the Privacy subreddit are complaining of being deactivated regardless of their privacy concerns. Social media giants like Facebook and Twitter have both had data privacy transgressions recently when they used two-factor authentication (2FA) account phone numbers for advertising purposes. This set of another firestorm of privacy concerns about Facebook and its use of user data and who they share it with. Discord users must have 2FA enabled to add a phone number, but the first option should be enough to secure an account. Also, this creates a problem for users who have two or more Discord accounts.
A deactivated account on Discord has been locked. Discord customer support will not unlock a user’s account. The only way to regain access to it is to add a phone number. However, to do that you’ll need to enable two-factor authentication first or the ability to add a phone number does not exist in the account settings menu until you do so. With a deactivated account, you can still log in but will be required to add a phone number.
Deactivating is not the same as a banned account. You cannot log in with a banned account on Discord
According to Discord support a phone number may only be verified with one Discord username. You’ll have to have a second phone number to use with another Discord user.
Discord – How to Add Your Phone Number
To add your phone number to Discord you first must enable two-factor authentication (2FA) by using either Google Authenticator or Authy authenticator app. If you don’t see the option to add a phone number under account settings, then you must add 2FA with an authenticator app first. This Discord tutorial shows Google Authenticator. Two-factor authentication (2FA) is a security measure that requires an extra step to log in to an online account. Rather than just using a username and password, users must also respond to a text message, email, or use biometrics to log in. This helps keep accounts secure.
Open your authenticator app and add Discord. Either enter the verification codes or scan the QR code to enable 2FA on Discord.
After adding Discord to your authenticator app, you’ll have a new option under account settings to add your phone to your Discord account.
After verifying your account with 2FA there’ll be another box to add your phone number to Discord.
- Log in to Discord in a web browser
- Go to Settings
- Go to My Account
- Enter your phone number with country code
- Discord will send an SMS text message to the phone number to verify it
- Enter the code from the text message to add it to the account
Now your phone number is added to Discord.
According to the subreddit, this will help protect against your account being deactivated if you change your password or connect using a VPN.
Adding your phone number to Discord adds another layer of security in case you need to recover the account. Adding your phone number to Discord will also allow you to connect to servers that require a phone number to chat. Requiring a user to have a verified phone number is the highest level of security.
