
SA Debt Collector Says Loan Customer Data was Compromised

A South African bank has announced its customer data was compromised during a ransomware attack on a vendor. African Bank is the latest to say that the attack on Debt-IN Consultants has impacted its loan customers.
Debt-IN Consultants (Pty) is a debt recovery service used by African Bank as well as others in South Africa. Debt-IN confirmed the data breach this week.
African Bank Loan customers’ personal data was compromised in the ransomware attack. However, the breach includes about 1.4 million South Africans according to Debt-IN. The breached data includes customer and employee data from other banks impacted by the attack.

“A robust mitigation plan has been implemented by Debt-IN to contain and reduce any further adverse impact,” says African Bank.
Stolen voice call recordings and private customer data were found posted online.
All data exfiltrated by the hackers was taken prior to April1, 2021.
“Debt-IN deeply regrets this cyber-attack, and we apologize unreservedly for the inconvenience and anxiety this data breach has caused our clients, and their customers,” says Debt-In chief executive Mark Essey, CEO.
“If you detect any suspicious activity, or feel that your information has been compromised, you can apply for a free Protective Registration listing with the Southern African Fraud Prevention Services (SAFPS),” the bank said.
