The US Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) announced has launched the Joint Cyber Defense Collaborative (JCDC). The new agency was established to work alongside CISA to execute cyber defense plans with the private sector and state, local, tribal, territorial (SLTT) governments.

JCDC plans on dealing with the most serious threats to the United States cyber security. Countering ransomware and dealing with attacks that affect cloud service providers will be a focus area.

Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, Microsoft, and Verizon are just a few of the industry partners that are working with JCDC. Others include AT&T, CrowdStrike, FireEye Mandiant, Lumen, and Palo Alto Networks

“CISA is establishing the JCDC to integrate unique cyber capabilities across multiple federal agencies, many state and local governments, and countless private sector entities to achieve shared objectives,” says the press release from CISA.

Of primary concern are cyberattacks on critical infrastructure – highways, bridges, major tunnels, dams, railways, utilities, buildings, food & agriculture – in the United States.

“The industry partners that have agreed to work side-by-side with CISA and our interagency teammates share the same commitment to defending our country’s national critical functions from cyber intrusions, and the imagination to spark new solutions,” said CISA Director Jen Easterly.

JCDC Mission

According to their site, JCDC will coordinate with stakeholders to coordinate cybersecurity planning and readiness with industry partners.

  1. Nationwide planning to address risk
  2. Situational awareness and analysis
  3. Integrate cyber defense capabilities to protect the nation’s critical infrastructure.
  4. Ensure plans for cyber defense operations are adaptive to defend against adversary activity conducted in response to U.S. offensive cyber operations
  5. Plan and collaborate to meet cyber defense needs
  6. Measure the effectiveness of cyber defense planning and capabilities
  7. Work Sector Risk Management Agencies (SRMAs) to use their subject matter expertise to tailored plans to address sector risk.
