Google has announced new research grants to prevent risks and abuse in the product design phase. The new research grants program will give cash awards to people or teams who discover design flaws with Google products that could result in a harmful or undesirable user experience.
The goal of the Research Grants Program and the existing Google bug bounty program is to offer the most secure and best user experience with Google products.
“Despite the growth and success of this program, there remains more work to be done,” says the announcement from Google.
An abuse risk could be seen as a product feature that could cause unexpected damage to data or platform when leveraged in an unexpected manner.
Google’s bug bounty program has recognized +1,000 security flaws in the three years since its inception.
The abuse research grants are different from the bug bounty program. This program offers grants to top cyber security researchers to fund work before they submit a bug.
How Abuse Research Grants Program Works:
- Google must invite a researcher to the program.
- Grants are given upon admission to the program. No strings attached.
- Bug Hunters apply for the targets we share with them and start their research.
In addition to these grants, cyber security researchers are also eligible for bug bounty rewards for the vulnerabilities they discover.

The reward amount is determined based on the number of people it impacts and the nature of user privacy at risk. Risks that are scalable by cybercriminals to ‘attack large populations are considered high risk.
Security flaws that result in personal data exposure are also be rated as a high risk bug.
Google has added numerous programs to help people interested in cyber security start or advance their careers. The company’s career program launched in 2018.
The U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that over 3 million cyber security jobs will go unfilled by the year 2024.
That means that cyber security is a lucrative career with plenty of opportunity.
In July of last year, Google announced over $100,000 in scholarships to help people earn certifications that could help them move on to high-paying jobs.
Three new Google career certificates – Data Analyst, Project Manager, and UX Designer – can be completed online. according to Google the average annual salary for a data analyst is about $66,000.
These three new career certificates are in addition to the existing programs Google offered in IT Support and Automation in Python Certificates.
All Google career certificates are administered through teaching platform Coursera.
