Saint Francis Ministries Reports Data Breach

Saint Francis Ministries Data Breach

Saint Francis Ministries Notifies Patients of Data Breach – Credit Cards, Social Security Numbers, and Personal Data Compromised

Saint Francis Ministries issued a press release reporting a data breach. Hackers accessed an employee email account from December 13, 2019 to December 20, 2019. The hackers accessed sensitive personal information including names, birthdates, diagnosis, treatment, and payment information. Saint Francis is notifying patients who are impacted by the data breach – soon. The number of affected individuals was not disclosed. Those affected by the data breach have not been notified yet.

The notice reports that Saint Francis became aware of suspicious activity on an employee email account on December 29, 2019. The email account was secured, and a third-party cyber security forensics firm was hired to investigate. The investigators determined that highly sensitive personal information for certain individuals was contained in the compromised email account when it was hacked.

Hacked Personal Information Includes

  • Username
  • Password
  • Social Security Number
  • Birthdate
  • Driver’s License or State ID
  • Bank or Financial Account Number
  • Payment Card Numbers – Credit or Debit Card Number
  • Treatment or Diagnosis Information
  • Prescription Information
  • Provider Name
  • Medical Record Number or Patient ID
  • Medicare or Medicaid Number
  • Health Insurance Information
  • Treatment Cost Information

So far, this data has not appeared for sale on the dark web.

Saint Francis will start mailing notices to people affected by the data breach on April 17, 2019. Another post on their website states that individuals will be given twelve months of credit monitoring and/or identity theft restoration services at no charge. Each year, anyone can order a free copy of their credit report from each of the three credit reporting agencies.

Saint Francis Data Breach – How Do I Protect Myself?

The highly sensitive data accessed in the Saint Francis data breach can be used to commit a variety of online crimes like identity theft and fraud. Everyone should review their bank, credit card, and financial account monthly. Use credit account monitoring services and identity theft reporting to monitor your credit reports for suspicious activity.
